Lindsey + Ben

Lindsey “Cookies” and Ben “The Professor”: He is so good at everything that he takes his hand to (drawing, guitar-ing, debating, knowing everything), that the cosmos saw fit to make him a terrible speller & tragically/comically bad at speaking other languages…especially Spanish & French. She insists that she is “not cute!” while simultaneously delighting in the fact that her rain jacket makes her look like a bumble bee!

Ben is also a crazy talented illustrator who does many things, including a project called, “Tragedy Series.”

Winter is Coming

As we rally for the final pre-holiday edit and album push, wanted to share our “light at the end of the tunnel.” Half of a project for the winter, our off-season. More on this moldy hunk of metal and wood soon, but just wanted to look up from the workings, and smile a little with you. Also, Joel’s beard!!

So excited, and afraid, of this next project.

Traditional Cambodian Wedding

They came to us wanting an intimate event in the woods, around a campfire, probably un-showered. However, sometimes, weddings evolve into more than what two people want. The marriage – that’s two people. Their own, freshly minted family, which may include a dog named Beaker. This is a complete contrast to other maverick-esk days we’ve been a part of, but there is so much between them, that it’s still beautifully unique and them. (Even though they are surrounded by generations of Cambodian traditions, and 500 people for the 18-hour day.) It’s like they almost took it as a challenge to still be themselves, under the adorned fabrics, jewelry, and customs.

People can be their most beautiful in tight-fitting boxes, and Lyna & Bunson are the kind of beautiful that still make us tear up going through these. We would’ve loved that hippie day in the woods, but not if we would’ve had to trade out everything that happened this day. Sounds very possessive, like it’s our own wedding, but we almost put ourselves in that mindset to really “be there.” We might cry, because that time when they seem like they’re the only people around, is what we always want in our daily life. It’s a feeling that can get crushed by trips to the DMV, long work hours, cereal for dinner, and rolling over to check email in the morning. But we make images like these, so people can remember what a good day felt like, and we always hope it’s not the best day of their marriage. That it was a good celebration, and look at the images as a reminder to always make time to be the only two people in the room, again.

Facebook & Instagram

There are so many new ways to share images, it’s hard to keep track. It’s no longer just a postcard on the fridge, or busting out an album around the holidays, so we’ve made a simple guide on the two main ones: Facebook and Instagram.

If these are things you might already know, we thank you for properly crediting us! If not, it just takes a few extra seconds to learn, and helps us from not having to put ugly watermarks everywhere. We liked working with you and if your friends are anything like you – we may like creating images with them, someday. Thanks for helping us continue making good images for good people.

If someone can see an image we made, but can’t find a trail back to us/our work, it needs to be credited. Always have a way back to our work whenever someone can see an image. If it’s your cover photo and you made it from an image in your photos that was credited, it won’t carry over and needs to be credited again. (Sorry, Facebook is evil sometimes.)

Just start typing in @blue window creative, and we’ll pop up as a clickable tag. If that doesn’t work, link directly to our page: http://facebook.com/bluewindowcreative

We spend a lot of time editing images to make them feel non-digital, resembling film. Please don’t put Instagram filters on them. Otherwise stuff like this will be out in the universe and people will come to us for some over-zealous sepia tones.

Our Instagram is @maryandthejoel. You can reference us in the image caption, even if you don’t follow our feed.

This works great, but only in addition to crediting @maryandthejoel in the caption.

We can be added in under “Add People,” but credit us in the caption, as well. (People will assume we were physically there, instead of also making the image.)

Getting Ready Series

Small patterns can be found in unexpected places. We really enjoyed seeing this series from Nazlee + Jay‘s day. It’s just a white wall, but when everyone unknowingly started posting-up at the same spot, it became delightful to see and wanted to share.

Jules

We aren’t good at posting images right away. We like to keep them a secret, between us and them; a clubhouse that only those involved are invited to. In an effort to share more in the moment, here are the images we took tonight of Katia and six-week-old baby Jules. (Their second genetic cocktail.) On a teeny $300 point and shoot camera that we love and consider our play one. Edited while Cat Power played in the background on Katia + Marc‘s inflatable mattress in their living room. They’re both exhausted and it’s late. So thankful these frients (clients turned friends) continue to let us “loiter in their life,” and all its beautiful imperfection. (Loiter in their life is a perfect Ed Kashi phrase, used to describe documentary photography.)

Vanessa + Tyler in San Luis Obispo, CA

We’ve selected a few tighter crops of the day to share, and more of their images can be found in their storyboard. (Images towards the end are some double exposure play from an old 35mm camera.) Not entirely sure how this fashion gal and a fireman put everything together in three months, from “Will you?” to “I do!” But was a spirited, kismet, partially unplanned and perfect that way, slice of their life.

Some of their first words to us: “We met a hand full of years ago through mutual friends. Flirted for a fews months, and then decided to make things official and go out on our first date. After that night, we were hooked and we’re pretty much inseparable. We went to Bali together three months later for three weeks, and I think that’s where we fell in loooooove! Four years later, Tyler popped the question in Jackson Hole Wyoming. After a little at-home wine tasting, he got me drunk, and i said YES! So now…we’re getting hitched! yipppppppppppppy!”
