I’m sure you’ll see much more of this over the next few weeks, but wanted to share the ad we just sent off today. Thanks to the sleep-deprived Young Design Grasshopper-Jamie, we have been able to come up with another unique set of assets for the upcoming show. The main illustration is just hinted at in this background, but will soon be adding flair to phone polls all over Kansas City! icon wink Wedding Hive : Feb 25th, Kansas City photo

Stay tuned for more! I know we’ve been hinting at this for a few weeks, but it will be worth the wait!

Happy 2010 : It Was Fun, 2009

We’ve been hinting at something over the horizon for a bit. Working on our marketing plan, processing, work-flow, sleep schedule, website, materials, and the like-taking the opportunity to prepare for this new year. So soon, some things will be changing-but for the better, and will be sure to include lots more eye candy and things that make us happy.

Something we want everyone to know is that we are always evolving. Our live, our work, our thoughts; seems like a good way to thrive.

And now, an image from our New Year. (We were at a speakeasy!) Much more to come in this sparkly new year.

Kat Likes Joseph & Vice Versa

Maybe three times a year we’ll be up at 5:30, and more times than that we stay up till then. Joseph had the idea of a sunrise shoot, and seemed like something different; which always makes our ears perk up. They were basically cuddling standing up the whole time, which equals good images of togetherness. icon smile Kat Likes Joseph & Vice Versa photo And the early morning light was new to our camera eyeballs; moody, growing stronger instead of diminishing like we are accustomed to.

They made us want to be on the other side of the camera. Why didn’t we get pictures like this when we were only a few months old? Except we’re kinda puffy and have pillow wrinkles on our face at this time in the morning.

Show & Tell Friday : Happy Holidays!

This was our first Chirstmas in some ways. It was our first Christmas in Oregon, and our first one spent by ourselves. Some traditions we started:

Listening to Iggy Pop while opening presents. Playing “within 6 degrees of separation” from Die Hard. (Die Hard is a Chirstmas movie; they were having a Christmas party when the terrorists attacked…) So we watched Lucky Number Slevin. (Bruce Willis was in both and we were reminded what a great movie that was.) This will be a fun game to play for years to come. We also made the rule that we’ll always use found paper to wrap; the personals/strip club section of the Portland Mercury made for interesting textures. We also removed the top part of our Ikea bed and slept on the living room floor; we assume Santa came in through the windows as we don’t have a chimney. We finally started a project that we’ve had in our heads for 6 years; was a long time coming and can’t wait to see how it progresses. And we’re making a birthday cake for Baby J (we hope He likes spice with butterscotch jello frosting, although I have the feeling he’s more of a Funfetti kinda guy.)

Happy Holidays to you, however you’re celebrating them, whether it’s old, or weird new traditions, by yourself, or with family. Oh, and that little tree was carved by Joel’s dad, complete with paper clip candy canes. We also aren’t known for our luck with breakables; hence the snowman head…he used to have a hat and bell for a body…

Show & Tell Friday : Help Portrait

PDX Help Portrait from Heather Knight on Vimeo.

If you’ve been following along on twitter or fb lately, you are probably already tired of hearing us rambling on about this, but now we have a slide show to prove it! Help Portrait is the brain-child of Jeremy Cowart and it has spread across the world in a matter of months.

The thought is that professional photographers in their areas get together, work with charities, and do a free portrait day. Heather Knight was the sleep-deprived mastermind of this Portland group, and we are still on a high from being part of the event. In the unassuming warehouse that’s home to Sandbox Studios, 38 photographers came together to help 46 families, but that’s nothing compared to the thousands that were helped on (and around) December 12th.

This wasn’t a gang of art school kids doing an assignment, these were seasoned professionals coming from portrait, commercial, video, musician, landscape, wedding, etc. fields. It was so energizing to walk into being a part of something so ego-free and collaborative. Macs set up everywhere, people on the floor talking about flashes, kids on the floor eating a donut. Being a photographer is really a lot more “alone” time than one might think in this “digital wonderland of merriment” (said in a voice similar to Ron Burgandy’s.) It was amazing to be part of an instant photo family, that invited us in and allowed us to document a bit of their day. It was quite addictive and we hope to seek out and be involved in more things like this. Can’t wait until next year; I’m sure the energy and enthusiasm will only amplify.

Also makes me think what other industries could do, or maybe already are, something similar. We’ve all had our “bubbles burst” by this economy, and it feels so nice to give as the simplest gestures can go a long way. Thanks to all who participated; it made for the best warm-fuzzy, holiday feeling on a gray Saturday.

Please note that not all of the images in the slide show are ours; they were a joint effort from several different talented photographers.

The English Dept : Portland, Oregon

This Show & Tell Friday is especially tasty! We recently had the pleasure of playing camera in Elizabeth Dye’s boutique-The English Dept. (Located at 11th and Alder here in Portland.) Elizabeth creates amazing dresses, wonderfully styled, and often using vintage fabrics. They also carry a selection of stunning handmade accessories, and designer collections from Jenny Yoo, Vera Wang, Melissa Sweet, and many more. Their new site is in the works, so check back with them as I’m sure it’ll be amazing. (You may even see a few of these images there!)

We first fell in love with her designs with one of our brides. (With Serah’s stunning, custom orange dress.) Needless to say, I was making googly eyes at everything in there and trying not to drool on their stuff. I am pretty sure I pet a few of the hair accessories, too-they just looked like they wanted to be loved.

Many thanks to The English Dept for letting us roll around on your floor and snag a few images of your cozy boutique! Everything in there makes me want to run through a field of flowers, flying a kite, while sipping on a latte. (Indeed that is a lot of multitasking, but in my imagination-it’s possible.) Can’t wait to see what else will come frolicking out of Elizabeth’s hands in the new year!

(If you’re a wedding lovely in the Portland area,  feel free contact us if you’re interested in being featured. We adore handmade, local, vintage, eclectic, sustainable, unique, and are excited to share!)
